Sri Sri Sri Kandukuri Nagaiah Guruswami: A Spiritual Luminary
Sri Sri Sri Kandukuri Nagaiah Guruswami was a dedicated practitioner of advanced yoga and spiritual disciplines. He is said to have been a contemporary of Sri Avadhuth Swami of Kadapa. These spiritual luminaries are believed to have been disciples of Sri Paramahamsa Yogeeswar Maharaj (also known as Kadapa Swami), a revered yogi who mastered Kumbaka Yoga. Sri Paramahamsa Yogeeswar Maharaj attained sajeeva samadhi in Bangalore after the villagers of Gadikota denied him the land he requested for his samadhi.
Sri Nagaiah Guruswami embarked on a path of intense sadhana by entering a cave on a steep hill near Gadikota. He remained in the cave until he attained nirvana. According to the villagers, he renounced food by cutting his throat as part of his spiritual discipline. Despite their attempts to make him drink milk, the milk spilled out from the hole he had created in his throat. After attaining Sajeeva samadhi, his mortal body remained in a lotus posture in the cave for years. However, wild animals dismantled his body over time, and the bones scattered. Villagers collected the scattered bones, placed them on a rock altar, and covered them with a cloth. Years later, devotees noticed that a few of his bones had disappeared. Local accounts suggest that a black magician took the bones and skull for black magic practices but met a tragic end, reportedly becoming mad and dying a miserable death as a consequence. Hence, devotees preserved his relics in a glass box and kept them in the cave.
Sri Paramahamsa Yogeeswar Maharaj and Sri Kandukuri Nagaiah Guruswami had a profound influence on the nearby villagers. Their teachings inspired villagers to practice Kumbhaka Yoga and perform asanas, including demonstrations of remarkable balance and control by performing yoga asanas on water. The legacy of these two yogis continues to inspire devotion and spiritual practice in the region.
